orbit

live · public ISS position feed · computed ground track

ready ORBIT · no data leaves your browser unencrypted

This is the same idea as a heavyweight WebGL experience, built the other way round.

The position, altitude and velocity are the spacecraft’s own published figures. The ground track is integrated here from that altitude rather than drawn as a decorative curve, and the orbital period falls out of Kepler’s third law: about 93 minutes, which is what it should be.

The globe is a graticule rather than a photographic earth. A plausible-looking coastline would be a fabrication, and on a page whose whole argument is that the figures are real, that is the one thing not worth doing. There is also a full-screen WebGL version of this at /atlas/.
